Job Description Summary
The Senior Manager, Software Engineering will lead and manage the Software Development team for new product development within STEMCELL’s Instrumentation Business Unit. The position has full responsibility for managing the software development on multiple new product development projects, resolving resource allocation, quality and timeline issues, reporting on progress and planning future group development and activities with senior management. The Senior Manager is also responsible for leading and developing the Software Development team and introducing new technology, architectures, competencies, processes, tools and regulatory requirements to drive the delivery of the product development program and product quality. The role requires close interaction with other groups within STEMCELL Technologies while bringing software development skill, knowledge and creativity to the team along with the discipline to deliver results.

Duties and Responsibilities
Consult with Senior Engineers, managers and stakeholders to set the approach and direction of the Software development team and lead the development activities to deliver high quality user interface, database and control software for STEMCELL’s instrumentation products which incorporate robotics, automation, imaging and liquid handling based on both in-house and third party technology.
Collaborate with key stakeholders including User representatives, Sales and Marketing departments to define and analyse requirements across multiple product development projects and lead the architectural design with the Software team, approving design specifications and test plans and reviewing project execution ensure they deliver within schedule, quality and cost constraints.
Manage and mentor the Software team developing skills, capabilities, technology and tools, facilitating continuous improvement in design practices and processes and ensure availability of appropriately competent personnel for all planned activities.
Drive improvements to software development policies and procedures, define development practices in alignment with STEMCELL’s Quality Management System (QMS) and good practice, introduce new regulatory requirements and manage the software development, production and deployment infrastructure.
Drive in-depth analysis to identify and resolve complex issues and risks, failure modes and bottlenecks and focus on continuous improvement to achieve quality standards, meet project milestones, minimize costs and increase performance.
Drive research into innovative techniques, methodologies and capabilities to advance product development and lifecycle management as well as strategies for improvements.
Contribute to departmental goal and budget setting, recommending revisions to company and departmental policies and procedures.
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar field with a minimum of 11 years of experience or a Master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience.
Minimum 5 years of experience managing embedded system design and development projects through the full lifecycle with experience in the life sciences area an asset.
Minimum 3 years of experience in managing functional teams, developing skills and competencies and improving processes and tools.
Familiar with regulatory requirements and quality system standards including ISO 13485:2016, lifecycle management (IEC 62304) and cybersecurity. Experience with medical device and higher compliance requirements (e.g. 21 CFR 820/11) is an asset.
Ability to coach, lead and develop software engineering teams.
Experience of automation including robotic and imaging systems for laboratory or clinical application.
Demonstrated project management and project planning experience using waterfall and agile methodologies and coordinating projects with varying deadlines.
Must have excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation.
Must be able to interact effectively with User representatives, Quality, Regulatory, Information Systems, Administration and Management personnel as well as external contractors.
