As a member of the Business Development team, the Sr. Intellectual Property Officer works on complex issues to secure and expand the company’s IP portfolio by preparing patent applications and leading prosecution activities through to allowance. You will be involved in reviewing and reporting on company and third party IP issues of diverse complexity and tasked with providing guidance on IP matters that align with STEMCELL’s business goals. Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyze IP office correspondence and independently identify the most appropriate strategy to address outstanding issues

• Collaborate with R&D to identify new inventions, provide frequent advice on complex cases, conduct due diligence, and independently prepare complete patent application drafts as required

• Conduct prior art searches for patentability / registrability and freedom to operate, analyze findings and market trends, report key highlights, and make recommendations to internal stakeholders to inform and influence strategic decision-making

• Identify potentially new opportunities to expand the company's IP based on product development progress

• Assess competitor patents and IP to identify potential business opportunities and risks, and share recommendations with the management team

Knowledge and Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in an applicable scientific or Engineering field, with a minimum 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience

• A law degree, with a particular interest in Intellectual Property or progress towards obtaining Patent Agent Certification considered an asset

• In-depth knowledge of the patenting processes to ensure the company's activities align with IP legal requirements

• Extensive experience drafting patent applications and replying to IP office correspondence

• Proven ability to comprehend prior art across all fields relevant to the company's business, and to be critical of such prior art

The annual base salary for this job ranges from:

$95,200.00 - $142,800.00

STEMCELL determines an individual’s pay within the range based on multiple factors including experience, education, job-related skills, and equity within the team or organization. For jobs that are eligible for sales incentives, the range noted above is inclusive of target incentives; actual incentives are based on individual performance results in accordance with company policy. In addition to base salary, STEMCELL offers a comprehensive total rewards package including health benefits, retirement savings, and more.
