Senior Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
Job Description Summary
The Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist in the Corporate Affairs department is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating various STEMCELL EHS programs globally while promoting a proactive approach to health and safety matters. This role supports management’s efforts to ensure compliance with all corporate EHS program expectations, and applicable health & safety regulations in all of the jurisdictions in which STEMCELL operates.
Duties and Responsibilities
Initial focus for this role will be to research, propose, and implement various safety programs, including but not limited to Early Safe & Return to Work, Mobile Safety, Contractor Safety, Biological Safety, etc.
Ensure legislative compliance and reporting of health and safety matters are met for all STEMCELL sites globally throughout North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
Act as an information resource to employees, managers, Joint Health and Safety Committee and contractors in the interpretation and application of internal safety standards, WorkSafeBC regulations, and other health and safety regulatory bodies in other jurisdictions.
Identify non-compliant or incomplete EHS procedures. Ensure documentation is completed to support company due diligence in ensuring the safety of employees and members of the public.
Provide advice/make recommendations to leaders on health and safety issues and compliance. Proactively identify risks and work with leaders on preventative actions.
Maintain the safety reporting process and ensure the timely and accurate reporting of all hazards and injuries.
Support and conduct safety walkthroughs and inspections.
Conduct health and safety training for employees as required and to support the development of specific safety programs.
Write standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and work instructions to support safety training.
Create and deliver training material for various health and safety programs in collaboration with the EHS team.
Collaborate with management to monitor safety compliance and identify safety issues.
Assist in the investigation of hazard and incident reports to provide recommendations to address safety concerns.
Maintain accurate and up to date records including hazard/incident monthly metrics, as well as meeting minutes as required.
Work with the EHS team to build and support the development of a proactive safety culture.
Other duties as assigned.
Post-secondary education is required e.g. Bachelor's Degree or Occupational Safety Diploma.
10+ years’ experience in a Health and Safety role.
Knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal OHS regulations, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
Knowledge of Microsoft office and Google Suite of Products.
Proven ability to think critically, troubleshoot and problem-solve independently.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) both in one-on-one and in group settings.
Thrives in a constantly changing and busy environment.
Maintains an advanced degree of confidentiality along with excellent judgement and discretion.
Builds strong cross-functional relationships between other departments.
Strong organizational skills; detailed-oriented and proficient at time management to execute multiple tasks.
