Job Description Summary
As part of a joint collaborative initiative, STEMCELL Technologies Inc. based in Vancouver, BC and the Hospital for Sick Children based in Toronto, ON are currently seeking a passionate post-doctoral fellow for a fixed term 2-year fellowship. This opportunity is a MITACS sponsored postdoctoral award that supports a specific project involving primary human airway epithelial cell cultures grown at an air liquid interface. During this fellowship, the successful incumbent will spend time in the laboratories of STEMCELL in Vancouver, BC under the direction of Dr. Juan Hou, and conduct research at the Hospital for Sick Children’s Research Institute under the direction of Dr. Theo Moraes whose research team focuses on understanding respiratory epithelial cell biology to ultimately improve clinical outcomes in children.
Duties and Responsibilities
Culture primary airway epithelial cells at air liquid interface
Expand, passage and stock primary cells
Perform functional assays on primary cells
Work with RSV (expand, quantify, stock)
Design and manage data collection
Ensure data integrity
Prepare and assist with grant and ethics applications
Interpretation of data in line with current literature
Perform statistical analysis in conjunction with statistical support
Identify and explore new research questions that arise during this work
Disseminate research findings through high impact peer-reviewed publications and research abstracts/proceedings
Teaching & Leadership: i) propose research projects for postgraduate students; ii) mentor trainees; iii) assist with leading and maintaining a harmonious research team; iv) and provide regular performance feedback and conduct performance reviews
Administration: participate in lab meetings
Completed PhD with strong background and publication record in epithelial cell biology and/or respiratory virus biology
Experience with air liquid interface culture is an asset
Excellent problem-solving, time management, written and oral communication skills
Ability to work as part of an inter-professional team
