Flow Cytometry Specialist

Job Description Summary

The Flow Cytometry Specialist within the Research & Development department is responsible for independently managing the flow cytometry facilities in the R&D lab and ensuring that flow cytometry data and sorting are of the highest quality. Key responsibilities include: operating the sorter, supporting lab users on the analyzers, maintaining lab instruments, vetting and implementing the use of standardized best practices, and providing flow cytometry training. As an in-house flow cytometry resource, you will be involved in organizing STEMCELL’s comprehensive R&D lab skills training curriculum and serve as a trainer for courses offered to lab staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

Flow Cytometry Support and Training

  • Serve as a dedicated in-house flow cytometry resource; 
  • Implement technical best practices, standardize sample prep, staining, and analysis protocols, consult on design of flow cytometry panels; 
  • Generate standard operating procedures; 
  • Provide an operator-assisted FACS service to support R&D team projects and train frequent users to operate the sorter; 
  • Provide mentoring, assistance and training in flow cytometry analysis; and, 
  • Host internal training and external seminars on flow cytometry, as required.

Lab Instrument Maintenance and Procurement

  • Run quality control assessments on lab instruments, maintain and undertake minor repairs as required; 

  • Manage service providers for repairs and regular preventative maintenance; 

  • Negotiate with suppliers for the purchase of flow cytometry instruments and service contracts; and,

  • Manage common antibody stocks, titer common antibodies.


  • MSc in Biology, Chemistry or related area, or BSc with at least 3 years of relevant experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience performing independent flow cytometry experiments.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, highly collaborative, team-oriented.

  • Ability to apply analytical thinking to independently troubleshoot equipment and propose solutions.

  • Training experience and knowledge of effective training methods desirable.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation).

  • Detail-oriented; proficient at time management and multi-tasking.

  • Alternate hours are desired and may be required.
