Job Description Summary
The Associate Director, Engineering will lead and manage the new Product Development Engineering Group in STEMCELL’s Instrumentation Business Unit. The position has full responsibility for managing multiple new product development projects, managing resources, quality, cost and timelines, reporting on progress and planning future group development with senior management. The Associate Director is also responsible for leading and developing the functional teams within the new Product Development Engineering Group and driving the introduction of new technology, competencies, processes and tools to deliver the product development program and maintain product quality. The role requires close interaction with other groups within Research and Development and other STEMCELL departments while bringing engineering skill, knowledge and creativity to the team along with the discipline to deliver results.

Duties and Responsibilities
Consult with Senior engineers, managers and stakeholders to set the approach and direction of the Product Development Engineering Group and lead the development of new instrumentation and disposable products incorporating robotics, automation, imaging, liquid handling and control software based on both in-house and third party technology.
Manage technical and resource requirements of multiple product development projects, approve design specifications, design and test plans, review adherence to the product development methodology, Quality Management System and international standards, and ensure projects execute within schedule, quality and cost constraints.
Manage and mentor the functional teams and personnel in the group, developing skills, capabilities and tools, facilitating continuous improvement in design practices and processes and ensuring availability of appropriately competent personnel for all planned activities.
Maintain an understanding of the product development field with a focus on development lifecycle and methodology, new technology, and customer requirements to deliver high quality, innovative products to our customers.
Evaluate business opportunities, Intellectual Property and competitive threats to build project and business development proposals with senior management.
Report to senior management on the product development program, project requirements and functional teams, making recommendations for resolution of competing requirements, improvements to skills and processes and growth plans for the next stage of the group’s development.
Align group activities and operation with Instrumentation Product Maintenance, Manufacturing and Service teams, manage inter-departmental requirements and engage with external suppliers and contractors as required.
Contribute to departmental goal setting and budgeting, recommending revisions to company and departmental policies and procedures.
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic or Systems Engineering, or related discipline with a minimum of 15 years of experience or a Master’s degree with 11 years of relevant experience.
Minimum 10 years of experience managing instrument design and development projects through the full product lifecycle, following engineering product development methodology, with experience in the life sciences area an asset.
Minimum 5 years of experience in managing functional teams, developing skills and competencies and improving processes and tools.
Ability to coach, lead, and develop product engineering teams.
Specific knowledge of laboratory automation systems is preferred with particular experience in motion control, robotics, liquid handling, UI and embedded control systems, sensing, machine vision and disposables development.
Must have excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation.
Must be able to interact effectively with manufacturing, procurement, quality, regulatory, administration, and management personnel as well as contractors
Familiar with regulatory and testing requirements including ISO 13485, UL, IEC, CE, RoHS with experience of cybersecurity and higher compliance requirements (21 CFR 820/11) an asset.
Experience in designing for low to mid-level production volumes and working with external suppliers is an asset.
