Job Description SummaryThe Tax Manager is responsible for managing all taxation aspects of the Stemcell Group of Companies including, but not limited to, ensuring timely and accurate tax global compliance, monitoring transfer pricing risk and ensuring compliance, identifying and implementing domestic and international tax planning opportunities, preparing and reviewing working papers to support Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax incentive claims, preparing tax provision working papers to support the financial reporting function, serving as a tax technical resource to all members of the business, resolving tax audits from Canadian and US tax authorities, and managing relationships with key financial service providers as required to support the taxation function.
This role drives the accuracy and timeliness of the Company’s tax filings with various tax jurisdictions where STEMCELL does business and is key to identifying tax risks and planning opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Monitor tax compliance calendar to proactively track all tax filing requirements, deadlines, and payments for the Stemcell Group of Companies.
Responsible for managing global year-end tax filings. Prepare and review working papers to support Canadian and US corporate tax returns and various forms. Coordinate with tax service providers and local staff in foreign jurisdictions to manage compliance status, make cash tax payments and ensure foreign tax returns are filed in a timely manner. Provide foresight to finance leaders by providing periodic updates on status of filings and upcoming deadlines.
Review updated transfer pricing guidance as needed from external advisors. Communicate findings and define responsibilities for the local finance team leads in various jurisdictions on a regular basis to ensure the global transfer pricing compliance requirements are met.
Prepare and review of SR&ED working papers and work with external advisors and management to identify opportunities to maximize claim.
Oversee the compliance process and review of commodity tax returns including sales and use tax, GST, PST, and other related filings.
Prepare and review tax provisions including working papers for current income tax, deferred income tax, rate reconciliation and note disclosures.
Develop tax models as needed to support the financial planning and analysis function.
Manage external and regulatory audits and examinations as required and ensure robust audit documentation is available.
Perform tax research and maintain a continuing awareness of developments and changes in tax laws and tax accounting guidance; serve as a tax technical resource to support various finance team members.
Participate in developing and implementing tax planning strategies as needed.
Analyze and prepare memos and reports on the tax effects of transactions.
Communicate technical tax issues clearly to business leaders and work effectively across all levels of internal process owners and external advisors.
Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration or a related field.
Professional accounting designation.
Completion of CPA In-Depth Taxation Course.
Minimum of 7 to 10+ years of related experience including previous experience in managing Canadian and US tax compliance, transfer pricing, indirect tax, SR&ED, cross border tax planning, and accounting for deferred income taxes; supervisory experience of a team is preferred.
Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; listens to others to obtain information.
Proven experience building strong relationships with senior management, external providers, business partners etc.
Demonstrated ability to manage own time, activities and resources to ensure department standards are met on a consistent basis.
Strong work ethic with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
Strong business and financial acumen and a willingness to have an impact on the business beyond the disciplines of corporate services and finance.
Advanced level computer skills, including excellent working knowledge of Microsoft 365; and Google Suite.
Experience with using ERP systems (experience with SAP is preferred).
Interested in biotechnology, life science research and a strong desire to learn.
Experience in a multi-divisional, multi-currency environment is an asset.
