Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform electrical hardware development and design verification for new laboratory automation systems and sub-systems under general supervision, contributing to the definition of module interfaces and the electrical architecture
Support in-house PCBA bring-up and prototype builds, including firmware development, documenting test plans and conducting first article testing
Integrate and troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical subsystems down to the component level (e.g., stepper/servo motors, sensors, fluidic pumps, load cells)
Execute electrical DFMEAs and risk assessments, making recommendations for mitigation strategies to ensure user safety and system reliability
Present technical recommendations at design reviews regarding manufacturability (DFM), serviceability, and obsolescence to support lifecycle management
Ensure designs meet relevant safety standards (e.g., IEC 61010, CE, UL) and support EMC/EMI testing activities
Knowledge and Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline with 2-6 years of relevant experience in mixed-signal electrical design, preferably within an automation or instrumentation environment
Ability to translate system/circuit performance needs into component specifications driven by datasheets and application notes, ensuring an optimal balance of performance, cost, and obsolescence
Mixed-signal design expertise including schematic capture, PCB layout (Altium/KiCad), circuit simulation (LTspice/QSpice), and high-speed digital interface design with signal integrity principles, including CAN, Ethernet, USB, PCIe, and HDMI
Experience across the mechatronic stack, including hardware design, embedded platforms (MCUs such as STM32, FPGA/CPLD, SOMs), and firmware development (C/C++, Python) for test and automation
Strong debugging and validation skills using lab equipment (oscilloscope, DMM, spectrum analyzer), including prototype builds, PCB rework, and troubleshooting
Hands-on experience designing systems involving motion control (motors, drivers), data acquisition (ADC, sensors, signal conditioning), and fluidics (pumps, solenoids)
Experience taking designs from concept through low-to-mid volume manufacturing, including production support, validation, and test fixture development
Experience with power management design (DC-DC converters, LDO regulators, protection circuits)
Familiarity with medical device industry standards (IEC 61326-1, IEC 61010), including EMC/EMI testing, troubleshooting, and certification support
