Senior Research Associate, Cell Line Development & Purification

Job Description Summary

The Senior Research Associate, Cell Line Development & Purification, is responsible for independently generating stable cell lines to produce recombinant molecules such as proteins and antibodies, including vector design, utilizing cell-based screening assays, and developing protein purification and characterization methodologies. This role also entails testing new and existing products, product components, competing products and platform technologies for the Recombinant Molecules Team in the Research and Development (R&D) department.

As an in-house expert in cell line development and recombinant protein expression, this role is responsible for independently designing, performing and troubleshooting complex experiments with appropriate controls, conducting data analysis including relevant statistical analyses, maintaining accurate written records of laboratory procedures, providing regular reporting of experimental results, generating technical product documentation, and developing experimental design with additional read-outs to meet product design criteria. This role performs literature reviews to identify alternative experimental strategies and/or new product ideas and contributes to the general functioning of the R&D laboratory and conducts all lab work according to the company standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently design and execute experiments to align with the product design criteria, including establishing novel methods and techniques.

  • Source and validate new product components and technologies.

  • Perform data and statistics analyses and calculations independently; analyze, interpret and evaluate complex problems based on a variety of factors; and frequently provide creative input for the next steps in the experimental design.

  • Perform proof of principal experiments to evaluate new technologies.

  • Troubleshoot experiments and identify abnormal or unexpected trends in data; offer suggestions of the root cause(s).

  • Present data at R&D data meetings, and provide conclusions and future plans.

  • Track competitor activity, perform competitor analysis, evaluate new technologies, prepare report summaries, and discuss the relevance with the Team.

  • Prepare data summaries and generate technical documentation as requested.

  • Perform literature reviews to propose new product ideas and experimental strategies relevant to the product design.

  • Provide training on more complex laboratory techniques and product protocols to the internal and external groups. May supervise a Co-op student.

  • Provide technical support to other departments as needed.

  • Support Quality Management System (QMS) initiatives and adhere to the QMS requirements, including maintenance of a detailed and accurate laboratory notebook.

  • Occasional weekend work (Saturday and/or Sunday) may be required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • MSc in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related area and at least 3 years of relevant experience performing independent laboratory experiments and research, or BSc in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related area and at least 8 years of relevant experience, preferably in an industry setting of the related field.

  • Extensive practical experience in generating stable cell lines to express recombinant proteins.

  • Strong knowledge of recombinant DNA technology, including expression vector design, is required.

  • Proven expertise in protein purification and characterization using a variety of laboratory techniques such as FPLC/HPLC, ELISA, PAGE, flow cytometry and cell-based reporter assays.

  • Experience with SPR or interferometry is an asset.

  • Proven experience with statistical analyses of biological data.

  • Ability to apply critical and analytical thinking to independently design, conduct, analyze and troubleshoot experiments.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) both in one-on-one and in group settings. Ability to present and deliver high level technical summaries of scientific data.

  • Detail-oriented and proficient at time management.

  • Team orientated – ‘one-team’ behavior is a must; a collaborative and adaptable mindset is required for this role.
