Research Associate, Bioengineering
Job Description Summary
A Bio/Chemical Engineer is required to work within the BioEngineering Team to accelerate the design, evaluation and methods development for devices that dissociate tissues into single cells. This work will include formulating experiments to fully test and evaluate novel instrument designs developed in collaboration with a mechanical engineering team. As the process engineer on the Team, you will develop methods and protocols to optimize device performance on different tissues. Insights gained from the testing will inform the next mechanical design iteration. Each design will be compared head-to-head against competitor devices and manual processing. You will apply knowledge of biological tissues for the formulation of enzyme mixtures to release cells from extracellular matrix. You will apply quantitative methods including flow cytometry, microscopy and process modelling to optimize the processing of tissues and then compare performance against alternative methods.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform laboratory experiments to evaluate the performance of prototypes;
Feedback required design change ideas to the mechanical engineer so they can be incorporated into the next design iteration;
Perform DOE optimization experiments to understand how controllable variables impact the performance of the device;
Perform DOE experiments to optimize the enzyme processing steps for the release of all cell types from the tissue with acceptable epitope maintenance;
Work with the mechanical design engineer to understand the function of the various unit operations in tissue dissociation;
Supervise the COOP assistant in the laboratory and ensure that experiments and analysis are performed correctly;
Perform regular literature and intellectual property reviews to identify new technologies and scientific trends, evaluate new technologies, identify customer needs, and monitor competitor activity;
In collaboration with the Strategic Marketing group, review marketing analyses, product lifecycle management, future trends; draft and present New Product Proposals and business plans;
Adhere to the Quality Management System initiatives and requirements;
May supervise a team of 1 or more laboratory staff.
MASc (or equivalent) with 0-4 years post-graduate experience in relevant field, such as chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, cell biology, biotechnology.
Advanced knowledge and experience in mammalian cell culture techniques and optimization, including cell-based assays, is required.
Experience in development of cell culture formulations desirable.
An independent researcher with product, methodology, and/or technology development experience.
Proven record of complex experimental design and execution, and application of statistical analysis.
Broad technical expertise and knowledge of diverse laboratory techniques.
Experience generating mammalian cell lines.
Strong knowledge of recombinant DNA technology.
Proven experience training personnel on laboratory techniques and protocols.
Understanding of biochemistry and metabolic pathways an asset.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills; collaborative, team-oriented.
