Systems Engineer, Information Systems
Job Description SummarySTEMCELL is looking for a Systems Engineer to join our energetic, fast-moving and passionate Information Systems (IS) team. As a member of the Infrastructure & Operations group, you will be responsible for the design, development and support of mission-critical cloud-based systems and tools for STEMCELL’s staff & customers. This role is additionally responsible for escalation support of critical issues, and mentoring other IS service team members in strong operating practices. This role is based in Vancouver and reports to the Senior Manager, Information Technology. This role will include working with colleagues in STEMCELL’s other global regions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Design, build & maintain STEMCELL’s enterprise-wide applications and shared-services. This includes monitoring and responding to system status notifications, and taking proactive action to improve performance & minimize outages.
Troubleshoot, reproduce and solve challenging operational issues in a complex enterprise environment, using multiple services across STEMCELL’s global systems footprint.
Design, develop and maintain our cloud-based infrastructure services and tools. These should enable you and your technical colleagues to operate safely at high speed and wide scale.
Partner with other technical disciplines within STEMCELL to develop and operate solutions that empower STEMCELL staff with secure, reliable and scalable tools to meet their goals.
Identify and lead opportunities for process & system automation to eliminate repetitive tasks, and improve the reliability, security and scalability of our systems.
Embed into corporate project teams as a technical expert to scope and advise on the design of new systems or applications. Take ownership for project milestones, and partner with solution vendors to oversee development and launch.
Work with the IS Security team to promote and maintain information security practices and systems throughout STEMCELL to safeguard the company, employees and systems.
Contribute to the development, documentation, and maintenance of global IT standards and practices.
Mentor and advise IS and technical teams on matters of engineering and architecture best-practices. Champion the exploration of new methods and technologies.
As required, respond to emergencies and system failures including after-hours problems; lead troubleshooting & resolution of escalated issues. Proactively plan and perform regular scheduled maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime.
Assist with life cycle management & goal planning.
Other duties as assigned.
5+ years of experience in the IT field.
3+ years of experience in a systems operations, engineering or DevOps role.
Degree or diploma in a technology related discipline, or a mix of industry certifications.
A track record of substantial contributions to a systems engineering/operations team supporting mission critical applications/services.
Experience building and operating production workloads using cloud providers or services. STEMCELL has a strong partnership with AWS; demonstrated experience would be an asset.
Experience working with automation or infrastructure-as-code technologies.
Possess excellent problem-solving skills to efficiently resolve root issues, including demonstrated experience leading troubleshooting and resolution of complex problems.
Strong organizational and time management skills accompanied by good judgment in order to prioritize, manage and work with limited guidance in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
Thrive in a high paced environment with multiple competing priorities. This role requires flexibility, with tolerance for ambiguity.
Curiosity to seek new and better ways of doing things, generating original and imaginative ideas, products or solutions.
Strong communication & business engagement skills. You will work directly with business stakeholders and other technical leads to design and build solutions to meet their needs.
Confident, results-oriented individual; lead by example and demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude.
Work experience in a regulated industry like Life Sciences, Pharma or Finance would be an asset.
